Brinkman Family Summary

First Generation

  1. Frederick1 “Fred” Brinkman, was born about 1818 in Hanover,1 then the “Kingdom of Hanover;” later, the Province of Hanover of the Kingdom of Prussia (1868–1918).2 He died in 1905 and was buried in Gibson Cemetery in Dearborn County, Indiana.3 He married in Dearborn County on 2 November 1839, Catherine Myers,4 who was born about 1819 in Ohio.5 Catherine died in 1899 and was buried in Gibson Cemetery in Bright, the same cemetery as her husband, Fred.6

Soon after Fred and Catherine married, they had their first child, a son, William.7 Although appearing in the 1840 and 1860 U.S. Censuses as a resident of Jackson Township, Dearborn County, Indiana, Fred does not appear in the 1850 Census for that county, nor has he and his family yet been discovered anywhere else in 1850.8 A possible explanation for that he perhaps returned to Germany for a time, taking his family with him. Although the 1860 U.S. census reveals that he and Catherine had children born in Indiana about 1840, 1841, 1844, 1847, 1854, and 1857, Fred apparently advised the census-taker that he immigrated to America in 1850 and had been here for 50 years. If he did return to Germany, he apparently took his family with him as no family matching the names and ages of their children and headed by a Catherine Myers Brinkman has been found either in searching the 1850 U.S. census.

Fred and his family do appear in the 1860, 1870, 1880, and 1900 U.S. censuses.9 He is consistently identified as a “farmer” with real estate valued at $700 in 1860 and $2000 in 1870, plus personal property of $300 in 1860 and $565 in 1870.10

However, the death certificate of her son, George F. Brinkman, lists her birthplace as Pennsylvania. (See Ancestry.com, Indiana, U.S., Death Certificates, 1899-2017 (Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2015), Indiana Archives and Records Administration; Indianapolis, IN, United State; Death Certificates; Year: 1902; Roll: 03, Record No. 22.) The informant on that death certificate was George F. Brinkman’s son, Ray Brinkman, so it seems likely that he assumed his grandmother was born in Pennsylvania where her parents were born, rather in Ohio. ↩︎

  12. The last U.S. census evidencing William Brinkman, born about 1840 in Indiana, was in 1860. He married Nancy Morgan that year. No official record regarding his death has been found, but a picture of a grave stone with the name William F. Brinkman was found on Ancestry, reporting that the grave was in the plot where Morgans are buried. That is also the cemetery in which many Brinkmans are interred. Although the date on the stone is no longer legible, the poster of the photo of the stone indicated “Cemetery transcribtions (sic) tell us that the stone originally read died 29 Aug 1863 age 23 years 9 mos 20 days.” (https://www.ancestry.com/mediaui-viewer/collection/1030/tree/369908/person/-1652911446/media/6ea3c879-7921-4fa6-be66-9642c18bc69f?queryId=a60520ad-6ecc-4ab3-ac44-04b80afd74d4&searchContextTreeId=&searchContextPersonId=&_phsrc=GMe57&_phstart=successSource).
